Nico's Story

Author:
Robert Ondrovic

Nico was born on November 4, 1995 and was very healthy and active up until the summer of 2004 when she suddenly began having "seizures" where she would collapse without warning and remain unconscious for several seconds. Multiple tests were performed by her local vets but there was no definitive diagnosis nor course of treament recommended. The number and frequency of the "seizures" continued to increase and it was suggested locally that she had severe heart disease (a mere 3 months after a full physical showed she was in excellent health).

On August 28, 2004, she was rushed to the Animal Medical Center and within hours was undergoing a pacemaker implantation. The AMC staff provided almost hourly updates to us following the surgery and called both late at night the day of the surgery and first thing the next morning to advise that she was doing well. She came home the very next evening with her own little battery pack installed (ironically, seemingly very appropriate for a toy breed).

Fast forward to the first day of spring 2010 and the blizzards had passed, the nor'easters had blown out, the sun was finally shining and the New York area saw temps in the 70's - - - a perfect day for playing in the park.

And that magnificent weekend spring day was greeted with a bark and a smile as Nico, 6 years later, was enjoying the benefits of her wonderful care at the AMC.

Here she is on March 20, 2010:
